Four steps to a perfect grain bowl

The key to making a great grain bowl lies in the balance and contrast of flavours, textures, and temperatures. By following this easy four-step process, you can combine wholesome grains with vibrant vegetables and dressings, creating endless seasonal variations.

The base

The base forms the heart of the bowl, providing substance and a nutty, earthy richness. We favour barley tossed with tender kale and a touch of olive oil for a robust foundation – but any seasonal grain mix works beautifully. Think quinoa, spelt or rice, paired with leafy greens, sprouts or finely shredded cabbage.

The vegetables

Adding layers of seasonal vegetables brings both colour and freshness — and this is where you can really play with contrasts. Each bowl typically includes:

  • A seasonal hero — like roasted miso-glazed aubergine, which adds umami and depth.

  • Something raw and fresh — such as juicy tomato slices or thinly shaved radish, for brightness and crunch.

  • Something pickled or lightly dressed — like our cucumber salad with ginger, which brings heat, acidity and snap.

  • Other seasonal heroes might include roasted pumpkin in autumn, marinated carrots in spring or grilled zucchini in summer.

The dressing

A flavourful dressing ties the bowl together. A creamy soy tahini dressing adds depth and umami richness here, but other options like yoghurt-based dressings, herb vinaigrettes or light miso sauces can offer interesting variations depending on the ingredients you choose.

The toppings

Toppings add texture and vibrant finishing touches. We like to sprinkle over fried onions, coriander leaves and a signature seed mix for crunch and aroma. To elevate the bowl further, crumble over feta cheese, add roasted nuts, or a sprinkle of citrus zest for a bright lift.

A quick note on proportions

A perfect grain bowl is all about balance — not just in flavour, but in quantity. Let the grains and vegetables do most of the work, and use dressing and toppings to accent and highlight.
